Today’s topic is probably the most boring one, but also the most important. Cleaning your makeup tools can make a huge difference in your skin condition. Last week, i saw a video review on Youtube about a makeup brush washing machine which was an epic fail by the way, but it reminded me that not everybody knows how to clean their tools properly.
I do my best to wash my brushes and sponges once a week, mainly because i hate how dirty brushes feels on the skin, but also i don’t want to see my face with pimples blossoming all over the place. They can become very easily a home for bacteria and a lot of nasty stuff you don’t want on your skin.
First of all, there is two different types of cleaning: spot cleaning which, basically means you can clean your brushes in a matter of minutes using an anti-bacterial spray like the one from MAC or Elf ( for a cheaper version). You don’t necessarily need a brush cleanser as you can have the same result using some alcohol. All you need, is few drops of alcohol on a wipe or a tissue and wipe your brush ’till it leaves no color behind. This is an effective way, if you are in a hurry while doing your makeup or if you don’t have enough brushes.
The second technique is my favorite, deep cleaning. I use baby shampoo, warm water and few drops of alcohol all combined in a small bowl. Let them soak in the liquid for few minutes and then swirl the brushes on my hands till there are no more products coming out. Once the brushes and sponges all clean, i spray them with a little bit of alcohol to sanitize them and make sure that any germs or bacteria are still in there. With this technique, i feel like my skin is in a better condition and my acne is not all over the place.
I love this post! It reminds me that I desperately need to clean my brushes though! haha! It’s such a chore sometimes though

It’s always a chore haha. Thank you Jemma for your comment
I love deep cleaning my brushes, I find it therapeutic and so satisfying afterwards when I see them all clean. I’ve never spot cleaned my brushes, I should look into this though as it’s probably the reason my eyeshadow always looks the same colour, despite using completely different colours! Oops haha. xx
